Since January 2014, Hanoi has officially had 6 walking streets which are located in the Grade 1 Conservation Area in the Hanoi Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem District. Such streets consists of Hang Buom, Ma May, Dao Duy Tu, Hang Giay, Luong Ngoc Quyen and Ta Hien.
According to the plan, the walking streets are expected to open for walkers from 18:00 to 24:00 in the winter and from 19:00 to 24:00 in the summer in Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
In order to realize the plan, the Hanoi People’s Committee has assigned the authorities of Hoan Kiem District to expand the walking space to the Grade I Conservation Area, ensuring protection of cultural relics and works, urban order and traffic safety, etc.
Since 2004, Hanoi has developed its walking streets in combination with the trade – tourism – service development in such streets as Hang Dao – Hang Ngang and Dong Xuan. In July 2012, Hanoi has extra 3 walking streets around the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum which are Chua Mot Cot (One-pilla Pagoda), Ong Ich Khiem and Hung Vuong.
